Instruction for authors

General aspects

First

Cuadernos de Economía Crítica (CEC) is a social sciences journal, specialised on economics´issues. It is published biannually by the Sociedad de Economía Crítica of Argentina and Uruguay (SEC).

The journal is open to a variety of theoretical and methodological issues and accepts manuscript submissions either from economics or other social sciences, which will be submitted to academic arbitration. Submitting a contribution to CEC implies the acceptance of its editorial policy. The lack of compliance with any of its instructions is reason enough for the Editorial Board to consider the contribution to be invalid.

The main objective of the journal is the debate on the economic issues faced by the Latin American countries, approached from a multidisciplinary, critical and rigorous perspective. Research findings of Latin American economies are considered particularly valuable for the journal. However, we also have interest in receiving contributions that address other theoretical, methodological and empirical issues.

The Advisory Committee is composed by recognized academics in the country and abroad.

Second

The journal is composed of the following sections:

  • Papers. Contributions in this section will be submitted to double blind arbitration. They can be framed in special dossiers or within the general interests of the journal. They must have between 25,000 and 55,000 characters with spaces (including text boxes, footnotes, endnotes and bibliography).
  • Interventions. Contributions in this section could be any text including transcriptions of speeches, lectures, interviews, round tables or notes and articles that are of interest and not necessarily exhibit an academic paper format. They must have between 10,000 and 20,000 characters with spaces (including text boxes, footnotes, endnotes and bibliography) and will be refereed according to rule #16.
  • Critical Reviews. Contributions in this section propose critical reviews of books or articles published within the last 3 years. The contributions in this section may use a free style, but must aim to perform a reading of the works considered capturing their objectives, contributions, limitations and mutual dialogues. They must have between 5,000 and 15,000 characters with spaces (including text boxes, footnotes, endnotes and bibliography) and will be refereed according to rule #16.

On the process of reception, evaluation and publication

fifteenth

Submitted papers will undergo through a process of review by a system of arbitration by experts. This process has four stages:

(a) First stage: the Editorial Board will determine if the article meets the formal criteria and relevance for the journal. Papers can be rejected for its lack of adaptation to them, without having to send them to external reviewers.

(b) Second stage: the paper will be sent to two anonymous external reviewers, specialized in the subject. The mechanism is known as “double-blind”, staying in reserve both the names of authors and reviewers during the review. In case that there is discrepancy on the decision between the reviewers, the paper will be sent to a third external reviewer. Reviewers will have a maximum period of one month to carry out such task.

(c) Third stage: based on the comments and suggestions of the external reviewers, the Editorial Board will decide if the paper can be: (i) accepted as originally submitted; (ii) accepted with modifications; or (iii) rejected. In all cases, the result of the review, with the comments and suggestions of the reviewers will be sent to authors through the Editorial Board. Where appropriate, the authors have two weeks from the date of shipment of the evaluations to make corrections and modifications of the case, which will be determining factors for its publication, and send them to the editorial board.

(d) Fourth stage: where appropriate, the Editorial Board verifies the incorporation of suggestions and comments of the reviewers, or its satisfactory response from authors. Once this review is completed, the paper will be accepted and will wait for its publication, otherwise rejected. Anyway, process of review is ended.

Authors should expect a final decision on their paper in a maximum period of six months, counting since the date of submission.

sixteenth

The contributions submitted to the Critical Reviews and Intervention section will go through an evaluation process within the Editorial Board, who can accept or reject the contribution, recommending changes to the document in case of its publication. Critical Reviews and Intervention receive an editorial treatment that guarantees the originality and relevance of their contribution.

Seventeenth

Compliance with this editorial policy is essential. Contributions that are not adjusted to these standards by the authors will not be published. The journal reserves to itself the right to make minor modifications prior to the publication, which in no case will change the content or main ideas of the text. These modifications refer to aspects of formal type such as spelling corrections, clarification in writing or any other aspects associated with criteria of style.

The accepted papers will be published and sent to the corresponding author to respond to questions or clarify doubts to the editor, to approve corrections and give the compliance. If the author does not respond satisfactorily to the queries raised by the editor in this final stage, the journal reserves the right not to publish the paper.
