The Argentina—China relationship: ¿a new dependency?
Abstract
One of the more relevant features of the global economy at the beginning of the XXI century is China’s status as a key world player, especially since China became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001. This event had a significant impact on the new international division of labor. China’s growing economic hegemony carried with it a reconfiguration of Latin America’s -and Argentina’s- position in the world economy. This article addresses the question if Argentina’s commercial ties to China in this new context, can be described as a relationship of dependency. To address this question we take two aspects the bilateral relations: trade in goods and services and China’s foreign direct investment in Argentina. Our hypothesis is that there is a growing relationship of dependency between Argentina and China, which result in further postponement of Argentina’s development potential.
