The marxist dependency theory and the world-unity approach. Contribution to an emerging debate
Abstract
This article aims at comparing the marxist dependency theory from Ruy Mauro Marini and the ‘world unity approach’ from Juan Iñigo Carrera. We argue that these views have several shared points: they have a historical perspective, both emphasize the national dimension, they identify the significance of value transfers between countries, and they share a similar approach on the super-exploitation of labour power in Latin-America. However, they have dissimilar explanations about the directions of the flows of value and the consequences that the super-exploitation of labour power has for the Latin-American societies. After presenting some of the similarities and differences between the two perspectives, we review the critiques levelled by Jaime Osorio to Iñigo Carrera’s approach.
Keywords: dependency, ground rent, Latin-America, super-exploitation.
