Automotive industry argentina and external sector (1983-2013)
Abstract
The automotive industry, a conglomerate of terminal and auto parts factories, has enjoyed historically in Argentina special protective regimes; nevertheless, its foreign trade balance has been negative time and again. This paper analyzes the external trade related to this industry, focusing on the growth cycles of the last thirty years: 1984-1988, 1993-1998 and 2005-2012. From 1984 to 1988, in a quite closed context, the industry run a deficit in its foreign trade as much as 1.000 dollars per vehicle delivered to the internal market. In the next stage (1993-1998), in an open economy, this negative balance grows 4-fold (some 4.000 dollars per vehicle). In the neo-developmentalist period (2005-2012), the negative balance diminishes slightly, reaching 3.600 dollars per vehicle. This improvement is due to an increase in the exports of finished vehicles, not to import substitution.
